Raise your hand if you are looking forward to turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberries, and pumpkin pie? Now raise your hand if you get totally cranky if you don’t have your 2pm daily snack and are now cranky about turkey, stuffing, green beans and mashed potatoes? My daughter LOVES Thanksgiving. So much so that this year for her birthday she has requested we have basically Thanksgiving dinner for her Birthday. And it will be just as easy as heading down to the store and getting the many, many variety of Thanksgiving Dinner options on hand.
But for some, food doesn’t come quite as easy. Though in this country for the most part, we think of food as almost a right, we all know there are thousands that go hungry on a daily basis. We barely go hungry for a few hours. Imagine being so hungry that you don’t feel well enough to even get up and go to school? That’s what it is like for many children in the Philippines.
Because of family connections, Robert Ferreira (owner of Verseo) and his family have started a program called “Food for Thought” in the Philippines. For many schools in rural areas of the Philippines, attendance is pathetically low. In part because children may need to help at home and for many, they are just too hungry to sit in a classroom and learn anything.
Food for Thought offers a simple solution. Provide free lunches at school to help raise attendance, the education level in the Philippines, and the overall health of a child. Since the inception of the program in 2012, it has done phenomenally well. Kids weights are charted against their attendance and in almost all cases, the increase in attendance, school prosperity and kid’s health has been tremendous. Food for Thought has given us at Verseo so many reason to be thankful. Thankful for healthy kids that want to learn. Thankful for being able to provide this program. Thankful for our own good fortune, family and friends. We are all so blessed.
